Plan Tech Selected for new Urethane Drive Gears
– Plan Tech Urethane Drive Gears Help Groom Ski Slopes… In More Ways Than One –
LOUDON, NH., May 11, 2017 — Plan Tech, Inc. today announced it was selected to provide urethane drive gears to one of North America’s largest ski grooming manufacturers. The urethane drive gears will be used in snow cats to drive the main tracks. Urethane drive gears are an ideal choice due to urethanes ability to absorb an impact and return to its original shape to provide smooth operations, both are key for long track service life.
Plan Tech was chosen for its deep urethane gears design expertise, product knowledge, and rapid prototyping capabilities. In fact, with this application, we are making a new aluminum mold to fit a larger size urethane drive gears than the OEM drive gear. Designing a larger gear allows more torque to be applied to the track increasing load capacity which was desperately needed from our customer. By calculating current gear size designs and knowing our customer required increased torque with a greater tear strength vs OEM drive gears we were able to reproduce the force applied to make each material fail. The original drive sprockets were known for short service life and would often time break when carrying a heavy load. The performance of the new Plan Tech urethane drive gears improved the tear strength by 50%! We found the strongest urethane drive gear design would incorporate a steel insert molded into the urethane drive gears. Each insert was chemically treated in our clean rooms to ensure a urethane to metal bond tear strength greater than the material. By improving the physical properties of the drive gear and being able to design a larger gear will reduce equipment downtime saving the end user thousands of dollars vs buying larger machinery.
